SIT 'N SLEEP
Nelson Bercier has been president and co-owner of Southern California mattress retail giant, Sit ‘n Sleep, since 1997. With his partner and local celebrity, Larry Miller, in the spotlight, Bercier happily remains behind-the-scenes where he is responsible for all sales, merchandising, store design and product.
Born and raised in Upstate New York, Bercier attended Boston University on a wrestling scholarship. In 1980, he made his way across the country to the Los Angeles area where he held various positions including supervisor at a medical office and he even owned a roofing company. In 1981, he met Larry Miller, owner of the one Sit ‘n Sleep store in Culver City, and after several years decided to join the company as a salesperson in 1984. He had no idea at the time that this decision was one that would change his life.
He quickly became the store manager, and as the company grew, so did his responsibilities. He was named general manager and oversaw the retailer’s expansion including one to three new stores every year, along with growing operational facilities. In 1997 when Phil Miller, Larry’s father and business partner, retired, Miller asked Bercier to be his partner and the new president of Sit ‘n Sleep. Currently, Sit ‘n Sleep has 39 retail locations and is headquartered in Gardena, Calif.
Bercier lives in Redondo Beach, Calif., with his wife, LuAna, and spends his time outside of Sit ‘n Sleep golfing, scuba diving, skiing and growing his vintage car and motorcycle collection. He has four children, two of whom are involved in his business, and two beautiful grandchildren.
