FURNITURE TODAY

Dave Perry, executive editor of Furniture Today, has been sleeping on mattresses his entire life, but has only been writing about them for a portion of his journalism career.

A native of Hartford, Conn., Perry has lived in the South since 1965, when his family moved to Raleigh, N.C. “My wife, who was born in Spartanburg, S.C., declares that I am still a Yankee,” Perry noted. “I fear she may be right.”

Perry majored in journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and began his journalism career at The Jacksonville (N.C.) Daily News in 1975. In January of 1977 he joined the High Point Enterprise, where he was Sunday editor.

In July 1983 Perry joined Furniture Today as a staff writer. Over the years he has held various positions at the newspaper, including bedding editor, assistant managing editor, managing editor and, since 1997, executive editor.

He first covered the mattress industry for five years in the mid-1980s, and returned to the mattress beat full time in December of 2001. In his work on the bedding beat, he has been called everything from “the conscience of the bedding business” to some less charitable characterizations.

“The bedding business has changed considerably over the years, and is currently in a state of major changes,” Perry observed, “but the friendship and support of bedding producers, suppliers and retailers has been a constant. I’ve been blessed to become an integral part of the bedding community. It’s been one of the highlights of my career.”
